Beach Cleaning Machines

A beach cleaning machine removes seaweed, litter, stones, and buried debris from sand, leaving a groomed surface behind. H. Barber & Sons has built beach cleaning machines since 1966, and the SURF RAKE is the most widely-used beach cleaner in the world, working in more than 90 countries

Beach Cleaning Machine Types

Barber offers two types of beach cleaning machine: tractor-towed machines and walk-behind sifters.

Walk-Behind Beach Cleaning Machine

The Barber SAND MAN is the premier walk behind sand sifting machine for cleaning small beaches, sand bunkers, and other sandy areas with ease. It is self-propelled and easy to maneuver.

Beach Debris Removed

The debris on your beach should drive the machine you choose. Barber’s beach cleaning machines are effective in removing beach pollution such as seaweed, dead fish, glass, syringes, plastic, cans, cigarettes, shells, stone, wood and virtually any unwanted debris. Barber beach cleaning machines are even used to effectively remove oil and tar balls from beach sand after oil spill disasters.

Who Benefits From Our Beach Cleaning Machines?

Our beach cleaners operate across six continents in some of the world’s most demanding beach environments. Here’s how different operators approach beach cleaning — and which machine fits each situation.

Resorts & Hotel Beaches

Resorts need daily cleaning before guests arrive and fast, quiet operation during off-hours. The SURF RAKE handles resort beaches of all sizes in a single early-morning pass. For boutique properties or congested pool-deck sand areas with umbrellas and sun loungers, the SAND MAN maneuvers around obstacles, while cleaning deep for hazardous materials.

Municipal and Public Beaches

High-traffic public beaches accumulate a mix of litter, seaweed, glass, plastics, and food waste. Municipal operators typically run the SURF RAKE on a daily or post-storm schedule. Its 15–16 acre/hour capacity means a full-size public beach can be cleaned before morning use — something a manual crew cannot match.

Small, Private, and Lakefront Beaches

Smaller beaches — private shorelines, lakefronts, coves — often can't justify a large beach cleaning machines but still benefit from smaller tractor-towed and walk-behind units, depending on the debris types and volume. The SURF RAKE 400HD and 400 serve many challenging smaller beaches around the world, and the Sand Man 850 works well on sand volleyball courts, playgrounds, and other common, yet tight, beach club areas.

Contractor & Beach cleaning services

Beach cleaning contractors serving multiple clients often run one Surf Rake across several sites per day. The machine's tow-behind design means it moves between locations quickly with any compatible tractor, and its focus on thorough efficiency allows fast, yet effective cleaning.

Emergency and Post-Disaster Cleanup teams

Barber machines have been deployed for oil spill response, red tide fish kill cleanup, and post-hurricane debris removal. The Surf Rake's tine-raking mechanism lifts seaweed, dead fish, and irregular debris that normally poses problems for cleanup teams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beach cleaning machine pricing varies based on model, configuration, and regional shipping. Surf Rake models span a range depending on working width and options; the Sand Man 850 is priced lower given its smaller footprint. We don’t publish list pricing online because freight, dealer, and configuration costs affect the final number significantly — contact us for a quote tailored to your machine and location. That being said, if you’d like to understand the factors that affect a beach cleaning machine’s cost, you can review our video & blog post on the topic here.

A mechanical beach cleaner makes sense when cleaning demands are too large or frequent for a manual crew — daily visitor traffic in peak season, regular seaweed or debris deposits, or a beach surface too large to clean efficiently by hand. For small, infrequently-visited beaches with minimal debris, manual tools may be sufficient. We’re happy to assess your situation and give you an honest recommendation.

The largest microplastics can be removed by certain machines, but smaller microplastics are near-impossible to remove. For targeted microplastic reduction, our resources section includes dedicated guidance on building a beach cleaning program specifically addressing microplastics. We generally recommend removing secondary sources of microplastics with normal beach cleaning machines and then employing targeted machines & screen setups for removing the largest microplastics.

Yes — the SURF RAKE is specifically built for heavy seaweed and sargassum loads. Its tine-raking mechanism lifts large volumes of wet seaweed that would clog a sifting screen, and deposits it in an onboard collection drum. It also handles the mixed debris that comes in with sargassum — shells, plastic, small stones. Learn more about the SURF RAKE and sargassum and seaweed.
